But it isn't. According to the California Supreme Court ruling, the estimated 18,000 same-sex couples who obtained neutered licenses from the state remain "married" under California law, as long as they don't divorce. Yet the headline writer wants you to believe that their very lives are hinging on today's ruling, which is certainly not going to rescind their licenses. Nothing's going to change for these couples unless the issue is eventually decided by SCOTUS in a way that provides federal recognition.
