Here are a few of Barry's ill-considered thoughts from his latest blogpost at FSB.
There’s a big split between the intellectuals and non-intellectuals on the anti-equality side of the debate, but not so much on the pro-equality side.
And:
Well, I think it has a great deal to do with why the pro-equality side is winning this argument. The core argument against marriage equality isn’t the secular argument skillfully articulated by David and Elizabeth; it’s that God doesn’t want gay people getting married. That’s an argument that has less and less salience with each new generation of Americans.

How tiresome of Barry.
SSMers can't win the religious argument; and SSMers can't win the moral argument. That is lost ground for the likes of Barry. So he turns to the ground he thinks he can find his greatest advantage.
But the intellectual argument destroys the SSM argumentation quite readily. This explains Barry's exagerated attempt to marginalize the secular case against SSM.
I left comments with other observations there. I may add more here when I have some time.
Unlike Chris' argument in which he simply has a different view of what marriage is, Barry is misusing the marriage discussion to bash religious individuals who share the same secular argument with David and Elizabeth. They just happen to be religious.
ReplyDeleteWe live in a constrained reality, limited to the laws of science, don't blame God if human beings have two biological parents, one maternal and one paternal and are conceived by male sperm fertilizing a female egg.
There are religious institutions that support gay marriage, but no one argues that they are imposing their religious beliefs on public policy when they speak on the issue.
You know, Barry's arguments have proven time and time again to be simply empty.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately FSB has now integrated their identity with his brand of anti-intellectualism, and I fear they won't be able to dissociate from it.
Barry tends to argue tautologically, he believes he knows what is equality and anti-equality, and then creates a narrative based on those sides that more derides than educates. Yet his argument seems to never rise above trying to point out that one side is anti-equality in his eyes.
Barry is a clown. He's flanked by a series of comical characters displaying the same tact that can be found in this video...

I'll be honest. FSB is as bad at administrating a site as the refs are that fall for such shenanigans.
For individuals I know who support gay marriage, at most, it feels like gay marriage is an addendum. They're not arguing it's the same, just something we should add on to marriage.
ReplyDeleteWhile we can understand the importance of biological parents raising their own children under the same roof, emotionally and intellectually we can also feel and understand something should be done for other types of relationships. It never is spoken or practice in terms of equality, simply I have a gay relative/friend/classmate/co-worker/neighbor and I wish them no harm.
One can't simply abolish the true intention of marriage, even if one supports gay marriage 100%. Not sure how many would deny the importance of one's mom and dad in their life or the lost if they were not present, and say marriage is simply a legal status for two adults who are unrelated.
