I’m sure you’ve been getting them as repostings. Here is an example.
“So, let's get this straight...Charlie Sheen can make a "porn family", Kelsey Grammer can end a 15 year marriage over the phone, Larry King can be on divorce #9, Britney Spears had a 55 hour marriage, Jesse James and Tiger Woods, while married, were having sex with EVERYONE. Yet, the idea of same-sex marriage is going to destroy the institution of marriage? Really? Re-post if you are PROUD to SUPPORT EQUAL RIGHTS.”
Equal rights to what?
Or is it stating same-sex marriage can ONLY exist if the prior understanding of marriage has been completely destroyed?
While well intended, this isn’t an argument for any relationship, gay or straight.
It is of my understanding, is that no one values these celebrities' behavior. And for them to undo their marriage(s), they paid a pretty hefty price in terms of financial settlement and how they are viewed in the public. Does anyone admire these people?
Thanks. I was planning to discuss this very thing soon. It's like saying "Let me get this straight... the Cleveland Cavaliers are stinking up the NBA court, but my chess club won't be admitted to the league?!?"
ReplyDeleteEvery time "marriage defenders" have spoken out against the type of things described, what have we heard? "Stay out of it! Don't judge! None of your business!"
We used to have laws in this country that punished people for having sex outside of marriage, especially as a married person or with a married person, and that made made divorce more difficult and someone who broke their vows could actually be penalized in a divorce. If all of that was still true, would there be a push to neuter marriage? I highly doubt it.
Conveniently, the SSMer did not name the many celebrities with a record of errant sexual behavior and marital failings who happen to also gladly support the SSM idea.
ReplyDeleteCameron Diaz was very vocal during the campaign that resulted in the CA marriage amendment; she has said, on national tv, that she 'loves porn'.
Tom Hanks has four children between two marriages and a divorce.
Morgan Freeman, who made an ad for the anti-8 campaign, divorced his second wife of 25-plus years -- they had an 'open marriage'.
And so on.
The conflict is not a conflict between celebrities-behaving-badly but rather a a conflict of ideas.
The SSM idea is designed to replace the marriage idea.
The latter has the historical and anthropological records on its side and a core meaning that justifies the special status of marriage and the lines of eligilbity that are drawn around that core, while the latter is bereft of all of that.
Funny how even advocates of neutering marriage compare their idea to failed marriages.
