Switzerland is considering a repeal its incest laws to make sexual relations between family members legal. It claims the law is 'obsolete' and that the courts have dealt with just three cases since 1984.
Several states in the US allow cousins to marry. Both parties also echoed concerns of rising incest if it was decriminalised, possibly leading to more genetic mutations among the population as a result.
Some members of the Swiss People’s Party are calling for the proposed amendment to be struck down immediately and for incest laws to actually be beefed up - calling, for example, for a prohibition on cousins having sexual relations and marrying.
That's so far just an idea of someone in the government. Before it gets real, it has to pass parliament, and if it does make that hurdle (not so sure), there will for sure be a referendum, so it's up to the people - and the conservatives will sure put a lot of money and effort into getting it refused, while the left and the liberals don't have any real heart blood (and therefore money) in favor of it.
ReplyDeleteThanks for informing us, where this stands at this point in Switzerland, that at this point it is just an idea.
