Where a wedding ring is a real status symbol...

For years my wedding ring has done its job. It has led me not into temptation. It has reminded my husband numerous times at parties that it's time to go home. It has been a source of relief to a dinner companion. It has been a status symbol in the maternity ward.

  1. So, a wedding ring is like a Mercedes? "Haha! I got mine and you got nothing!"

    Nice.

I've been married for 7 years, 8 in August, and I've never worn a wedding ring. Maybe I just don't need to rub anyone's nose in my good fortune.

  2. PF, I haven't been wearing my ring for several years now, my father never wore his either. Many pregnant women at the maternity ward never wear a ring, because their fingers are too fat from their original pre-pregnancy wieght.

Still sadly, Erma statement does resonate. We know the father of our child just can't walk away, without a divorce and some cultural shame. I know too many women who have their baby daddies there at the birth, but as the months pass he doesn't stop over as much and fails to bring over a box of diapers. Within five years many of these men are there at all to help and completely out of the lives of mother and child.

  4. So, a wedding ring is like a Mercedes?

Another quote from Mrs. Bombeck, I think, answers this nicely...

"Don't confuse fame with success. Madonna is one; Helen Keller is the other."

And a man and a woman who are committed to each other before having a child, is more like the latter in my book.

    Do you disagree?

  7. Marriage has no guarantees. If that's what you're looking for, go live with a car battery.
