So Far Today in the Proposition 8 Trial

UPDATE 5:20pm PST: There's nothing further to add for the evening update because both Leff's and Dolan's late coverage focused mainly on emphasizing the end of the plaintiff's case, rather than the first witness for the defense, who pointed out the political, legal cultural, religious, and social power that homosexual people, as a group have in the state.

Maura Dolan reports on LATimes.com about today's testimony so far, including the first witness for the defense.

A political scientist testified at a federal trial today that gays and lesbians had wide support in California among elected officials, unions and major corporations.
Isn't that obvious? Just consider the bills passed by the legislature and the actions taken by unions and corporations. (Any business owner that favors neutering marriage is already free to extend benefits and family discounts to partners.)
[Kenneth P.] Miller [who teaches political science at Claremont McKenna College] said the Democratic Party in California was a strong ally of gay men and lesbians and was on record supporting the repeal of Proposition 8. He also testified that the California Teachers Assn. contributed $1.3 million to defeat the marriage ban, and leading industries in Silicon Valley joined the campaign against it.
The "No on 8" side raised more money than the "Yes" side. Exactly how, other thank the marriage amendment, is California any less than supportive of "gay rights"? Prop 8 is not about hurting anyone.
