In the first set of images, why do people have a tattoo on their faces that says, "NQHB"? What can it mean?
In the second set of images, who's that big dude? or dudette? and what's going on?
I am only awaqre of a SINGLE instance were a Roman emperors married a man.
ReplyDeleteOne time an Roman emperor married his unick - (castrated boy) He was quickly diposed inpart because of theis debauchery...
So this is extrmeley misleading, as it makes it sound gay and ordinary for emperors to have same-sex "marriage" - nothing of the sort is true.
Chairm: Its "NOH8" as in no-hate. It is not unlike the music manager in the movie "AirHeads" which forced the upstart band onstage, then immediately pretended to be the victim of their cruelty in front of the audience.
ReplyDeleteFitz: That was Nero, and it wasn't a wedding or marriage. There was a custom of the time, a tradition for many centuries (if not longer) of purchasing boys. The only reason it was considered a marriage (that I can tell) is that the historian recorded that purchase as a dowry. Perhaps rather then giving it legitimacy, to further discredit the wildly unpopular ruler.
I'm also with you, if they want to call that an example of the same-sex marriage they are fighting for, they can. I just don't think it is wise.
But I think you meant to post that under Playful's post below on the subject?
So zero instead of Q, but what does N mean?
ReplyDelete"NO" is said straight out, I can't tell if they are using a zero or capital 'O'. Then you combine the "H" with "eight", a homophone for "ate" to get "hate". Its more of an abbreviation than an acronym.
ReplyDeleteAh, so the people in the images want to say, "no hate" duct tape?
ReplyDeleteNQHB makes as much sense.

The blogpost is a compare and contrast of two sets of images/ messages.
Its art, its up to the viewer to interpret. But all I can tell from the design of the work is that the subjects are meant to look as innocent. Note the use of white as well as the ultra-soft lighting and post production effects. Their poses suggest subjection, to make them look victimized.
ReplyDeleteI think you already keyed on that from the S&M reference.
I have no problem with their message, hate can and does victimize the innocent. However, in this context this message is more political, masking the victimization their campaign wishes to do on others by pretending to be the victims themselves. Its more about labeling who is the victim and who is the victimizer for their own gain then actually decrying hate.
And the temporary tattoo is poetry.
ReplyDeleteThese images deserve to be mocked. Hence the compare and contrast blogpost; and its title.
For readers who may be unfamiliar with past pro-marriage imagery used in Opine blogposts:

"800 lb gorilla.."
