China's Gender Gap Leaves Millions of Single Men

"Sex-specific abortions remained extremely commonplace, especially in rural areas," where the cultural preference for boys over girls is strongest, the study said, while noting the reasons for the gender imbalance were "complex."

Researcher Wang Guangzhou said the skewed birth ratio could lead to difficulties for men with lower incomes in finding spouses, as well as a widening age gap between partners, according to Global Times.

Ironic. Follow me on this, because the result is reminiscent of classic game theory.

A couple with a child may choose to ensure they have a male, to help pass on the family line. Yet if they do that through birth selection means, as a society adopts that self-centric policy they ensure that there is one less female to pass the line on with, once again seeing the same problem. A long time ago we coined the phrase "800lb Gorilla" to represent responsible procreation, which people seemed to keep running away from to make arguments to neuter marriage while running into it at the same time. I think at the heart both are attempts to be selfish in the midst of a clear social need, and in the end have the same effect. But that is a whole article on its own.
