Changing the Game Because You Lost

There's a move underway in California to create a new state constitution. One of the reasons people like the Los Angeles Times Editorial Board support such a movement is because it currently takes a supermajority to raise taxes, and some people fret that a state with high personal income, sales, gasoline, business, and other taxes needs even higher taxes.

But I don't doubt that another reason is because California voters adopted the California Marriage Amendment. The direct vote of the people was seen as a progressive tool when it was implimented. Now, when the people have used it to take back power from overreaching judges, sore losers want to turn over the game board and start all over.

It's not like I think the state is functioning well. In fact, I think the state needs to be split. But the CMA is something that was done right. Since this really isn't the place to go into the general politics of California, if you want to read more about this you can find more at my namesake blog.
